The jackhammers had all but broken ground when the project came to a screeching halt. It was April of 2016 and Andrew Ross had secured planning approval for URBNSURF Melbourne, a man-made surfing facility powered by Spain-based Wavegarden technology. The preliminary stages were over; waves would be breaking by late 2017. But then, Ross received a call. “We’ve been working on something I think you’re gonna want to see,” the engineers in Spain told him. So, he flew to Europe and checked out the new project, dubbed “The Cove.” And instantly, Ross knew: “Shit, I thought to myself. I’m going to have to redo everything. It was so good that we had to start over with this new design.” For...

The City of Melville has voted in favour of entering into a ground lease with Urbnsurf to build Perth's first surf park at Tompkins Park in Alfred Cove. More than four hectares would be used for the project, with plans for the surfing lagoon itself to be the size of a football field. The wave park company still has to jump through a number of state government regulatory hurdles before it can commence construction after getting the tick of approval from the council Thursday night. Urbnsurf said the total project would cost around $30 million and they would have access to the land for 30 years, with the option to extend for another 20 years. "The facility will become a world-class surfing destination, producing 1000...

A wave park on the Swan River in Alfred Cove is one step closer after the local council voted to approve a ground lease. Melville City Council voted seven to four in favour of the park in a marathon meeting last night. Urbnsurf Perth will now get access to 44,065sqm of riverfront land at Tompkins Park. Wave Park Group founder and executive chairman Andrew Ross said the vote was a win for the wider Perth community. “Tompkins Park is one of about 30 sites in Perth we have examined over the past four years, and no other location is as well suited to the development as this one,” he said. The wave park has been opposed by the Alfred Cove...

Plans are advancing for artificial surf breaks in suburban Sydney, Melbourne and Perth using a Spanish design called The Cove that has won over Australia’s national surf coach Andy King. The baseball-diamond shaped “wave gardens” planned by Australian firm Wave Park Group each take up 2.2ha, and create 1029 waves an hour. King tried The Cove in Spain in October with Australian world tour surfers Julian Wilson, Ryan Callighan and Josh Kerr and now wants to use the wave pools to train Australia’s first Olympic surf team. Surfing will make its Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2020. “They have finally replicated something that’s got similar power to the ocean with the unpredictability of the ocean,” King said yesterday. King said...

Australia is known to have some of the world’s best surf towns. Perth is not one of them. But an artificial lagoon may soon offer ideal conditions for hanging 10 Down Under all year round. The facility will consist of a 5.7-acre and 4.4 million-gallon wave pool, a climbing wall, parkour path, skate park, and artificial beach, with a café, bar, and clubhouse on the side. “Perth has amazing beaches, but is widely recognized as having quite poor surf conditions for most of the year,” Wave Group founder Andrew Ross tells Digital Trends. “And, in fact, several...
